Beyond Pocahontas

I’ve been working with author Peter Firstbrook on promoting his book A MAN MOST DRIVEN: John Smith, Pocahontas, and the Founding of America (Oneworld Publications). Did you know that Pocahontas saved John Smith’s life not once, but twice? That is, if you can count the first time at all, since Peter argues in the book that the first time was really just a misunderstanding – Smith was actually undergoing a ceremonial induction into the tribe, not an attempt at murder.

Hear more about the book on PRI’s The World, and learn more about how Smith named New England and influenced its history in this interactive edition of his 1616 map at Smithsonianmag.com.
